about

In October, 2012, I set out to write ten songs with ten different collaborators. Ten songs (plus one I wrote solo), each written in ten different ways, with ten very different musicians. Then recorded and produced by other members of the ten in various home studios across the country. They were all mixed and mastered by Mike Hagler at Kingsize Studios in Chicago. This was one of the most rewarding things I've ever been part of. I can't wait to do it all again.

Notes:
2. Jim Elkington* wrote what could be the soundtrack to an industrial scifi film. I wrote melody and lyrics for some adorable friends of mine. // 3. Paul Burch writes country music, but he was kind enough to help me with lyrics for this spacey, "Brigitte Bardot and the Supremes" tribute to my favorite novelist. // 4. Jon Langford lends a spooky melody to my angsty plea for familial intimacy. Backing sistah-girl vocals by Bethany Thomas. // 5. The Dirty Rooks’ Grant Gholson and I musing on muses, inspiration, and undeserving rock and roll idols. // 6. One night, Packy Lundholm and I sat around making lists of influences, drinking probably too few beers, and pondering the experience of listening. // 7. Julie Nichols plays like Leon Russell. Working together on this, we discovered that we love working together. // 8. Found things: Jean Cook, the violinist, found an electric kalimba. I found a moog, and words that are more machine than human. // 9. Pugs Atomz is the eclectic, cool-as-a-fan rapper you'd be friends with in the indie-coming-of-age-film version of your life. A busy man–I was so glad we caught up with each other. // 10. Bethany Thomas has a voice that won't leave you once you've heard it. Her lyrics here have the same effect. We've been singing together since before I knew what to sound like. // 11. Alex Kliner and I are bound by all things music + technology + puns (n' roses)**… This song was originally conceived on a tiny midi controller in WhoCares, Nebraska. //
*All songs produced by Jim Elkington and Tawny Newsome
**neither of us enjoys guns n roses.
